Our Environment Today – For A Healthier & Brighter Tomorrow!
Cc:
Kathleen
Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and
Human Services
Lisa
Jackson, EPA Administrator
CDC/ATSDR

First,
we want to thank the Obama family for bringing worldwide attention to the
importance of practicing good stewardship, simply by planting and consuming
foods grown/raised without the use of pesticides, growth hormones, additives,
etc and the positive domino effect this simple step has on ones health and well
being and also on our environment and natural resources. We also want to, again,
thank Kathleen Sebelius for showing her yearly support of Toxic Injury Awareness
and Education while Governor of Kansas. In Addition, our hats are off to
Administrator Lisa Jackson of the EPA, Director Thomas Frieden MD, MPH of the
CDC, Director Howard Frumkin of NCEH/ATSDR and Acting Director Edward Murry PhD
of DTEM for the CDC's Leadership Council program, "National Conversation
on Public Health and Chemical Exposures."
Most
of those living with Toxic Injury/disabilities are homebound due to the
seriousness of our reactions to added exposures. We are forced to live in
isolation in order to survive. However, we don’t let that stop us from trying
to prevent this from happening to others, especially our little ones, our future
leaders, our future generations. It saddens ~ no, it makes us fighting
mad, to hear the following, and realize that no preventative or remedial action
has been taken:
•Research
shows that there is a corresponding rise in pcp's, bped's, dioxins, pthalates
and other
•"In
a strongly worded declaration, many of the world’s leading environmental
scientists warned Thursday that exposure to common chemicals makes babies more
likely to develop an array of health problems later in life, including diabetes,
attention deficit disorders, prostate cancer, fertility problems, thyroid
disorders and even obesity.” Chemicals harming fetuses--LA Times article,

•A declaration by about 200 scientists from five continents amounts to a vote
of confidence in a growing body of evidence that humans are vulnerable to
long-term harm from toxic exposures in the womb and during their first years.
•Research shows that:
•
there is a corresponding rise in birth defects & infant mortality to the
increase in consumer product toxins.
•
both long term small dose and short term large dose exposures are causing
permanent debilitating illnesses.
• there
is a corresponding rise in childhood disease, chronic health conditions and
neurologic conditions to the increase in consumer product toxins, as well as in
adult populations.
•
“According to the CDC, 133 million people in the U.S.—almost half of all
Americans—are now living with these and other chronic diseases and conditions,
which now account for 70% of deaths and 75% of U.S. health care costs.” Safer
Chemicals, Healthy families; Case for Reforming the TSCA.
The
devastation caused from toxic exposures from the known toxic chemicals in
our everyday
personal
and household products are felt in every town, county and state, Nationwide, and
is a World~Wide problem of pandemic proportions.
The
citizens of and visitors to the United States are unknowingly exposed to air
pollution, water contamination, overuse/misuse of pesticides and toxic mold
issues, etc. that manifest in seemingly spontaneous, severe and disabling
conditions. According to the Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Science
only 2 % of doctors receive training to enable them to correctly diagnose
the causes of these toxic injuries.
Through
awareness and education all citizens and visitors, not only around the DC area,
but in every corner of the world will gain lifesaving knowledge and be better
able to make informed decisions, which will help stop the illnesses and
disabilities before they happen. Thereby saving health, lives and lifestyles,
protecting the environment, and natural resources. These all serve to task and
drain our precious and limited financial resources across America and around the
globe. We could go on and on with innumerable facts, so astounding that
they too beg the question, “how on earth did we ever let this get so far
out of control?”
By
declaring May “National Toxic Injury Awareness and Education month” you take
a stand against discrimination, and for the civil rights of the toxically
injured. You would be initiating education and awareness, not only for our
nation but for other countries. You would be leading the charge to implement
urgently required proactive measures to protect all citizens worldwide from
further
injuries
and disabilities due to environmental and consumer product toxins. This would be
a landmark victory for the United States of America, citizens around the globe,
and our future generations; it would restore civil and human rights to all and
offer relief and hope to many. It would underscore America's commitment to
restore global environmental health, as witnessed by the size of our delegation
to the international summit on Global Warming. It is a win - win situation.
Even
though most of those ill and or disabled by Toxic Injury must live in
isolation, we still volunteer our time, talents and limited energy and resources
to raise awareness and education by any means possible. Why? So others don’t
have their health and financial independence taken away; we fight to regain all
our basic Civil Rights, which are being denied due to the denial of access
by invisible barriers of pesticides, mold and other consumer product toxins.
But
due to the limitations of our disabilities, we can't do it alone. We can't raise
awareness through the regular channels... we can't go into public to march or
speak or protest; the barriers to our civil rights prevent us from actively,
publicly fighting to regain them.
Without
your immediate intervention, the statistics and the devastation will continue to
rise. Prevention must
be our first line of defense! Recognition and knowledge about toxically
induced and exacerbated illnesses, disabilities and premature deaths must be of
the highest National and World priority. Only through education and awareness
can this oversight be corrected and many with toxic injuries may once again
become financially independent and enjoy being contributing citizens.
We
need your signature, your help and your support. We
are submitting our proclamation request to you and pleading with you to
recognize the desperate need for designating the month of May each year
as National Toxic Injury
Awareness and Education month.
Please read the attached information, and issue our proclamation.
We would appreciate your letting us know it was received. If we can be of
further assistance, do not hesitate to contact us.
Please
send “Original” signed Toxic Injury Awareness and Education Proclamation to
the National office and the Founder, Peggy Troiano at the Florida address listed
below by first week of April or sooner if possible.
Sincerely,
your friends in Hope & Health,
Peggy,
Julia, Jennifer and John
In
Support of World~Wide Toxic Injury Awareness & Education Proclamation
WHEREAS:
people of all ages throughout the world have developed Toxic Injury, illnesses,
and disabilities from toxic exposures.
WHEREAS:
Toxic Injury is often characterized by medical intolerance to very small amounts
of air pollution, petrochemicals, mold and other toxins found in homes, schools,
work places, our everyday products and environment. It can be caused by acute or
chronic exposure to one or more chemicals, pesticides, and solvents.
WHEREAS:
Toxic Injury may include multiple, often disabling illnesses and can be life
threatening.
WHEREAS:
Toxic Injury is a chronic debilitating condition causing serious financial,
employment, learning, housing, health, social and other consequences.
WHEREAS:
The prevalence of these illnesses and the lack of knowledge and qualified
doctors clearly warrant further education in this field for the public in
general, future as well as practicing doctors, dentists, rescue personnel as
well as other health care, social service, rehabilitation, housing, architects,
HVAC designers and installers, building maintenance and cleaning personnel,
school and employer/supervisory persons at schools, work places and public
facilities and pest control personnel. “Applied Knowledge is Power”, and
that Power can save precious lives!
WHEREAS:
There are diagnostic codes readily available for toxic effects of many chemicals
found in our everyday environment and surroundings.
WHEREAS:
Those suffering with Toxic Injury deserve the same rights, acknowledgment,
respect, support and help allotted to other illnesses & disabilities.
THEREFORE,
I__________________________________________________(add your title, name and
Country/ Homeland) support increased awareness, education, understanding and
research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Toxic Injury
and do hereby officially designate May as Toxic Injury Awareness &

HELP
STOP the POISONING
Applied
Knowledge is power ~ Prevention is key
2010
OPEN LETTER TO: The U.S. President Obama, Governors, members of
Congress and Senate of the United States of America, Presidents, Prime Ministers
and World Leaders around the globe,
Toxic
exposures/injury is a very serious issue that is of pandemic proportions and
demands your immediate attention, time, acknowledgment and your corrective
action. Toxic Injury is unequivocally physically, and financially devastating to
the people, the economy and the environment. Toxic Injury can affect the
respiratory, central nervous, immune, musculoskeletal, porphyrin, metabolism and
hormone systems. It can cause
abnormal egg, sperm, genital deformity or cancers such as prostate, breast,
leukemia, brain and others. Toxic Injury is often characterized by medical
intolerance to minute amounts of air pollution, petrochemicals, mold and other
toxins found in our homes, our everyday products and environment. It can be
caused by acute or chronic exposure. Toxic Injury is non-partisan, it transcends
the boundaries of race, color, creed, economic level, social status, educational
status, age, gender, urban or rural dweller, blue or white collar, or sexual
preference. It is, tongue in cheek, an equal opportunity disability. . .
Therefore,
we petition President Barack Obama, Governors, members of Congress and Senate of
the United States, and all World Leaders to exercise your power and
responsibility and take immediate appropriate action to protect the health and
welfare of our children, grandchildren, our future generations, our environment
and declare May: “Toxic Injury Awareness and Education Month”.
Without
your immediate intervention, the statistics, and the devastation, the cost of
lives, lifestyles, our monetary resources and the environment will only become
more astronomical. Awareness, recognition and knowledge about toxically induced
and exacerbated illnesses; disabilities and premature deaths must be of the
highest National and World priority. The accumulation of toxic substances
in the environment is having a bigger negative impact than even the carbon
emissions on global warming, yet goes unrecognized.
We
are the fastest growing segment of the disabled population. Dr. John Green a
specialist in neuro-degenerative diseases in children says, " 6 out of
10 children suffers from a neurologic condition due to (consumer product)
toxins.” Other specialists have repeatedly linked all childhood cancers to
consumer product and environmental toxins. The same is true for birth defects,
as studies show adult body burden of toxins are transferred to the fetus and
have been measured in umbilical chord blood. Those facts are horrifying enough,
but according to CDC 95% of the adult population have blood serum levels of BPA
that cause changes on 200 genes. Genetic damage leads to disability and illness.
We must stop the poisoning.
Our
current health care professionals and welfare programs are unprepared to
recognize, diagnose or treat those suffering from toxic exposures/injuries.
Through adequate training and continuing education they will be better
able to identify and treat toxic injury/illness early, before disability
develops.
IMPORTANT
FACTS
•
Physical barriers prevent wheelchair access, invisible barriers (toxic
chemicals, pesticides, scented products and mold) deny us our civil rights as
guaranteed under the ADA Amendments 2008.
•Discrimination
must cease against those with toxically induced or exacerbated
illnesses/disabilities. Our
government, doctors, and other health care providers including hospitals and
health care clinics, emergency shelters as well as in home health care and other
service personnel urgently need information about reasonable accommodations to
provide their services without causing us more health harm.
•“The
overwhelming evidence shows that certain environmental exposures can contribute
to life-long learning and developmental disorders,” noted Ted Schettler, MD,
MPH, with the Science and Environmental Health Network. “
We should
eliminate children’s exposures to substances that we know can have these
impacts by implementing stronger health-based policies requiring safer
alternatives. Further, we must urgently examine other environmental contaminants
of concern for which safety data is lacking. ”
•“The
proportion of environmentally induced learning and developmental disabilities is
a question of profound human, scientific and public policy significance,” said
lead author Steven G. Gilbert, PhD, DABT, of the Institute of Neurotoxicology
& Neurological Disorders, “and has implications for individuals, families,
school systems, communities and the future of our society. The bottom line is it
is our ethical responsibility to ensure all children have a healthy future.”
Attendance, performance, and attention spans ALL improve when the quality of air
is increased.
•
There are millions of toxins presently in use today ~ only a handful has
ever been tested for safety or human consumption or use.
EPA, CDC
•“We
could cut the health costs of childhood disabilities and disease by billions of
dollars every year by minimizing contaminants in the environment;” said Phil
Landrigan, MD, MSc, of the Children’s Environmental Health Center at the Mount
Sinai School of Medicine. “Investing in our children’s health is both
cost-effective and the right thing to do.”
•85%
of adults have at least 13 pesticides in their blood of the small selection of
those tested, there are 869 more that have not been tested. EPA
•In
2005, the CDC and Prevention completed screening for the presence of 148 toxic
chemicals in the blood of a broad cross section of Americans; it found that the
vast majority of subjects harbored almost all the toxins.
•In
the same year, the CDC’s National Survey on Family Growth concluded that rates
of infertility were rising for women under the age of twenty-five, a spike many
scientists attribute, at least in part, to routine exposure to toxic chemicals.
•The
Environmental Working Group conducted tests on the umbilical cords of ten
newborns in 2006 and discovered that cancer-causing, endocrine-disrupting, and
gene-mutating chemicals had passed from the mothers to their fetuses through the
placenta.
We
can not afford to continue using consumer product or environmental
toxins. The price tag is far too high.
